3 simple tips on how to choose the perfect pair of shorts

Shorts can be a good staple in your wardrobe – particularly as we are heading into another hot Australian summer.  They are versatile and if you choose the right pair, can be dressed up for date night, worn in the workplace or as a casual weekend style.

I bet you’re thinking ‘what is a good style of shorts for me?’.

There are so many different styles around this year that it can be overwhelming and difficult to know which to choose. I don’t want to complicate things for you, so I have put together 3 simple tips on how to choose the right shorts for your wardrobe.

Length – very important.

When checking the length of the shorts look at the length of the inner leg.

length of shorts

Select a length that you are comfortable wearing. If you are short like me or have short legs in proportion to your body, try and keep the length of your shorts above the knee, ideally mid-thigh or even shorter. This will ‘lengthen’ your leg.

If you are lucky enough to have long legs then don’t limit yourself, all lengths will work on you.

Look at the width of the leg – also very important.

The width will vary from style to style. If you feel uncomfortable wearing shorts but want to give them a try, have a look at a ‘skort’. This is a combo skirt and short style and they are wider in the leg and usually made from a softer, flowy fabric.

If you have thicker or muscular legs, go for wider legged shorts, not something which fits firmly over your thighs.

If you have very thin legs, go for a narrower leg on your shorts.

Think about it like this – whatever your leg shape might be, you want your shorts to flatter them, and give you a stylish overall look.

The rise – how high to wear the waistline.

I personally prefer a high-rise, the same as when selecting a pair of jeans.

If you have a well-defined waist then definitely go for a high rise, which will accentuate your waist.

If you have more of a square body shape you may prefer a mid-rise. Check out my blog about body shape if you are not sure of yours.

Finally, think about how you are going to style your shorts and where you are going to wear them, as this can influence the type of shorts you choose on the day.

My latest purchase was from BigW. It is a matchy matchy set so I can style them in multiple ways.
