Autumn Jeans Guide 2026: Finding the Right Fit for Your Shape
Jeans can be one of the hardest things to buy.
Most women have tried on pair after pair, only to walk away feeling frustrated, confused, or wondering why nothing seems to sit quite right. And with so many styles around at the moment, skinny, straight, wide leg, barrel leg, stovepipe and bootleg, where do you even start!.
The good news is that there is not one perfect style for everyone. The aim is always the same: finding the jean shape that works for your body shape, your lifestyle and what makes you feel great when you put them on.
Let’s break down a few of the main styles you will be seeing this autumn and how to wear them.
SKINNY JEANS

We all know skinny jeans, have worn them and many of us still love them. And yes, they are still on trend. The difference now is really in how you style them.
Skinny jeans are fitted all the way down the leg which makes them great for
- showing off your shape
- tucking into boots and
- layering with longer tops and jackets
- dressing up
If you love skinny jeans, wear them.
However try styling them with a longer knit, shirt or blazer to soften the line. Be creative and add some texture through your layers and accessories. Easily dress up with a pair of heels or wear casual with slim lined sneakers.
This Autumn/ Winter season, the look to style is a fitted top, layered by a structured blazer and knee-high boots for a polished look.
Note though, they can also highlight the thighs and hips, so be mindful of balance if those are areas you prefer not to draw attention to.
STRAIGHT LEG JEANS

Straight leg jeans are a classic, and honestly, one of the easiest styles to wear. They fall straight from the hip down to the ankle, not too tight and not too wide. That makes them a very flattering option for most body shapes.
- They are ideal if you want balance and a relaxed look that still feels smart and put together.
- A high-rise straight leg in a dark indigo wash can work well for the office, styled with a shirt and blazer. They look great with ankle boots, pointy flats or a simple pump.
- Straight leg jeans are very versatile. The main thing is whether a mid-rise or high-rise works best for your body shape.
- If you are more hourglass or pear shaped, a high-rise is probably best.
- If you are straighter through the body, a mid-rise can sit really well.
STOVEPIPE JEANS

You may have heard the term 'stovepipe' and wondered what it actually means. They are similar to a straight leg jean, but usually a little more structured and slightly narrower through the leg. The exact shape does vary from brand to brand.
Stovepipe jeans are great if you want
- something slimmer than a straight leg, but not as fitted as a skinny jean
- they are a lovely option if you like a tailored, polished look
- want something that works across casual and dressier outfits
- To wear them with sneakers, flats, heels or ankle boots
I especially like them sitting neatly over the top of an ankle boot to create a clean, line.
BARRELL LEG JEANS

Barrel leg jeans are definitely one of the more fashion-forward styles around at the moment. They are fuller through the leg and taper in slightly at the ankle, which gives them that curved shape. They can feel a little scary at first, but when styled well they can look fantastic.
They work particularly well for
- women with broader shoulders
- for those who are straighter through the body and want to create a bit more shape.
- being creative for an interesting outfit
The trick with barrel leg jeans is balance. Because there is already volume through the leg, it usually works best to keep the top half more fitted or streamlined. A tucked-in top, a snug knit or a cropped jacket can all work well.
If you are petite or curvier, just be careful that the volume doesn't overwhelm you. You want shape, not too much fabric.
It is also worth trying a few brands, because some barrel leg jeans are made in a heavier denim and others in a softer fabric. Some taper more at the ankle, while others sit looser through the whole leg. Trying different brands it will make it much easier to work out what suits you best.
WIDE LEG JEANS

Wide leg jeans are still everywhere and they have that strong ‘90s influence.
They are usually fitted through the waist and hips, then fall out into a wider leg. They can look very stylish and modern, and they are great for
- balancing out the hips and thighs
- creating length, especially if worn with a heel or a more streamlined shoe
- a relaxed and modern look
- can take you from casual to evening quite easily
- change your sneakers for a heel or a dressier flat, add a blazer or jacket, and different accessories and you have a very different look
Wide leg jeans can feel amazing on but the key is getting the fit right through the waist and hip. The style varies from brand to brand, with some being really wide. And if you are petite like me, be careful not to go too wide, as too much fabric can drown your frame.
Personally, I find the fabric weight makes a difference too. In a heavier denim, I often prefer an ankle length. In a softer denim, a full-length wide leg can work beautifully.

So what works for your body shape?
There is never a one-style-fits-all answer, but here is a simple guide to get you started.
If you are -
- curvier through the hips and thighs, straight leg, stovepipe or wide leg jeans can work really well.
- straighter through the body, barrel leg and wide leg styles can help create more shape.
- petite, straight leg and stovepipe jeans are often easier to wear because they have less bulk
- love your legs and want to show them off, skinny or stovepipe jeans can be a great choice.
A Final thought
Do not get too caught up in what is trending.
The best pair of jeans is the one that feels comfortable, works with your lifestyle and makes you feel confident when you walk out the door.
Try a few different styles, have a play with proportions, and do not be afraid to step slightly outside your comfort zone. You might be surprised by what ends up suiting you best.
