Choosing the Perfect Swimwear for Your Body Shape

by ANTOINETTE STONHAM

Finding the perfect swimwear can feel overwhelming. For so many women, it’s one of the hardest garments to shop for, and I completely understand why. Swimwear is more revealing, more fitted, and far less forgiving than everyday clothing. But when you understand what to look for, it can also be incredibly empowering.

So make time for YOU, don’t rush through this process.

During a recent shopping and styling session with my client, our focus was on finding swimwear that not only fitted beautifully but felt comfortable, supportive and confidence-boosting. The goal is never to change your body, it’s to work with it.

Here are the key things I always consider when helping my clients choose the perfect swimwear for their body shape. These tips are based specifically on choosing a flattering, well-fitted, one-piece swimsuit, which is often the most versatile and supportive option for many women.

1.     Start with Body Length

One of the most overlooked details in swimwear is body length.

If you have a longer torso, you may find one-piece swimsuits pull uncomfortably or sit too high on the leg. Look for brands that offer long-line or which are adjustable styles. If you’re shorter through the body, a high-cut leg or higher waistline can help elongate your frame.

2.     Necklines Matter

The neckline of a swimsuit can completely change how it looks and feels on your body. A V-neck or plunge style helps elongate the torso and is great for balancing curves. A square neckline offers structure and support, while a high neckline can provide extra coverage and a sleek, modern feel. The right neckline should flatter your bust and feel secure.

3.     Bust Support Is Key

Support is everything when it comes to swimwear. This includes built-in cups, under-bust seams, thicker straps or adjustable ties. A seam under the bust can create shape and lift, while ruching through the body adds softness and forgiveness. The aim is to feel supported without feeling restricted.

4.     Choose the Right Straps

Straps aren’t just functional; they’re part of the design. Thin straps can feel delicate but may not offer enough support for a fuller bust. Wider or adjustable straps provide comfort and stability, while cross-back or halter styles can help distribute weight evenly.

5.     High Cut, Low Cut or Boy Leg

The leg line of your swimwear plays a big role in how balanced your proportions look. A high-cut leg elongates the legs and feels modern and flattering. A lower cut offers more coverage and comfort, while a boy-leg style is practical, sporty and great for active days at the beach or pool.

6.     Don’t Forget the Back

The back of a swimsuit is just as important as the front. A scoop back feels classic and easy to wear. Lace-up backs allow adjustability and add interest, while square backs offer structure and a clean, contemporary look. Comfort and support should always come first.

7.     Details That Make a Difference

Small design details can completely transform how swimwear fits and feels. Ruched sides create softness and movement that disguise all the lumps and bumps, while seams under the bust or through the waist can define shape. These style elements help show off your natural curves rather than hide them. Some brands have included a tummy control layer, which feels firmer around the tummy area.

8.     Confidence Comes First

The most important part of choosing swimwear is how it makes you feel. When your swimwear fits properly, supports your body and suits your personal style, it gives you an instant confidence boost.

Remember, dressing well, even at the beach, isn’t frivolous. It’s self-care. And when you feel confident, it shows.
