How to style Bermuda shorts

by ANTOINETTE STONHAM

Bermuda shorts started trending in the 1940s, and in the 1990s were a huge trend following on from my favourite movie, ‘Pretty Woman’. Today you’ll see them styled in many different ways, for Spring /Summer and even into the cooler months.

Bermuda style shorts traditionally sit on or just above the knee. As I’m quite short I prefer mine to sit above my knee or mid-thigh length, as it makes my legs look longer. There are many styles to choose from but select a pair that suit your height and body shape.

Remember it’s all about PROPORTION.

If they are not styled properly they will add bulk to your body shape. It’s also important to pair with the correct style of top and shoe if you want the best effect. If you are styling a baggy pair of shorts go for a more fitted top, tuck it in and add a belt.

The shoe you choose will make an impact. If you’re short like me you will want to keep away from ankle strap sandals as they will shorten your legs by giving a ‘chop off’ line at the ankle as well as the bottom of your shorts.

Choosing a pair of Bermuda shorts is similar to choosing a pair of jeans, you need to consider the rise. The high-rise works better on me as it elongates my body and it’s easier for me to tuck my top in.

Bermuda shorts are very versatile to style. You can add a blazer or long lined vest for a more polished ‘Look’ or alternatively they can be worn with a t-shirt or a white button down shirt for a more casual style.

I’ve been playing around styling my Bermuda shorts and have put seven different styling ideas together for you. Enjoy and I hope this gives you some ideas for your own wardrobe.
