What’s Trending for Winter 2026 in Australia?

by ANTOINETTE STONHAM

We’ve been so lucky with the weather this winter. The days have been beautifully sunny, the mornings crisp, and while the evenings cool down, it hasn’t felt like the winters we’re used to in Australia.

This Winter season the styling is all about elevated comfort, rich textures, and versatile layering.

COLOUR TRENDS

You'll continue to see plenty of brown, mocha, and espresso tones, alongside rich burgundy, olive green, and forest green.

For lighter layering pieces, we're moving away from harsh dark colours and embracing softer neutrals like mushroom, taupe, and creamy white.

To add a playful touch, look for pops of butter yellow and powder blue. Try pairing powder blue with chocolate brown or rich burgundy with butter yellow for a fresh, modern look.

TAILORING GETS A REFRESH

Oversized tailoring is still here, but we're seeing a shift towards more structured silhouettes. Think strong shoulders and cinched waists, replacing relaxed denim shirting and boxy jackets.

There’s no need to rush out and buy a whole new wardrobe, though. If you already own an oversized blazer or coat, simply add a belt to create the same effect.

  • For a powerful, polished look, style the matching pinstripe vest and pants with a tie for a modern take on classic tailoring

TEXTURE TAKES CENTRE STAGE

If you love a cosy jumper, you're in luck. This winter, knitwear is all about texture:

  • Chunky cable knits
  • Matching knit sets
  • Fine merino layering pieces
  • 90s drop shoulder jumpers

CARDIGANS

Knit sets are one of my favourites. They're effortless to style and always look polished. Soft merino layers are also a worthwhile investment, offering warmth without the bulk and making excellent travel companions for winter.

DENIM FOR EVERY STYLE

Denim-on-denim continues to be a major trend, whether you prefer matching washes or mixing different shades.

When it comes to jeans, I believe the most stylish option is the one that suits you best. Whether you love a classic straight leg, have embraced wide-leg styles, or want to try the barrel leg trend, wear what makes you feel confident.

FEMININE DETAILS RETURN

Necklines change from year to year, and this winter we're seeing the return of the ‘funnel’ neck. Haven’t heard this term before? Chances are, you’ve already started seeing it around though – it is a high, structured collar on a coat, jacket, or jumper that stands straight up around the throat. It doesn’t fold or roll over like a traditional turtleneck. This one is not my personal favourite, particularly for people who have a shorter neck. In saying that, the funnel neck can look incredibly stylish, when styled well.

I'm especially excited about the return of Victorian-inspired details, including:

  • Frills
  • Ruffles
  • Lace
  • High necklines
  • Brooches

These whimsical, vintage-inspired touches add personality and charm to any outfit.

MORE IS MORE

This season, we're moving away from minimalism and embracing maximalism – and yes, that is a real word. It generally refers to the opposite of minimalism—the tendency toward excess, abundance, and fullness. Love it!

Expect to see:

  • Mixed textures
  • Layered fabrics
  • Statement accessories
  •  Bold combinations

Think of:

  • Leather or vegan leather
  • Suede
  • Wool
  • Corduroy
  • Fringing
  • Bouclé and teddy textures
  • Faux fur and vintage furs
  • Satin
  • Plaids, checks, and tartan prints
  • Sheer fabrics

Remember, trends are there to inspire you but always dress for yourself.

FOOTWEAR TRENDS

The right shoes can transform an outfit. This winter's key styles include:

  • Knee-high boots
  • Western-inspired ankle boots
  • Loafers with colourful or textured socks
  • Chunky biker boots

My personal favourite? A great pair of knee-high boots.

DRESSES AND SKIRTS FOR WINTER

If heavy denim and wool trousers aren't your thing, there are plenty of stylish alternatives:

  • Midi-length knit dresses
  • Satin skirts with oversized jumpers
  • Maxi skirts with boots
  • Sheer garments layered with cropped wool jumpers
  • Asymmetric dresses
  • Drop-waist dresses

Ruched dresses are very popular as they disguise the tummy and are comfortable to wear.

Knit dresses are a staple in my autumn and winter wardrobe. Layer them with a vest, long scarf, faux fur, or a suede jacket for extra warmth and style.

ACCESSORIES MATTER

Accessories can make or break an outfit. This season, look for:

  • Oversized scarves
  • Structured handbags
  •  Wide belts worn over coats and knits
  • Gold statement jewellery
  • Vintage-inspired brooches

A floral scarf is a simple way to elevate even the most casual outfit. Just imagine you've been in activewear all day and need to pop out, throw on a trench coat and add a floral scarf, and you instantly look polished and intentional.

EASY OUTFIT FORMULAS

  1. Wide-leg jeans + fitted knit + oversized blazer + loafers
  2. Slip skirt + chunky jumper + knee-high boots
  3. Tailored trousers + merino top + long wool coat + sneakers
  4. Dark denim + white tee + trench coat + ankle boots

Most importantly, have fun with your wardrobe this winter. Experiment with textures, add pops of colour, and use accessories to make each look your own. Trends come and go, but confidence and personal style never go out of fashion.
